With climate change in full force, it is important to do what we can to care for the environment. One of the best ways to give Mother Nature the love she deserves is by planting trees. While this may sound straightforward, it can be a challenge. Trees are living, breathing creatures just like humans and animals. They’re complex organisms with nutritional requirements similar to every other inhabitant of this planet. Planting a tree and watching it grow requires attention to detail and proper care. This article will explore some tips to ensure any newly planted tree grows tall.

1. Digging the proper hole

Planting Trees the Proper Way

It’s important to not simply dig a hole to fit the tree root ball. Make sure the hole is two to three times the size of the sphere of roots of the tree you intend to plant. Be careful with the roots as they are what the tree uses to soak up nutrients. Make sure the tree is facing the direction you want when you put it into the hole. Once the tree roots into the ground it cannot be moved.

2. Refill the hole

Next, place the dirt back into the hole. It isn’t necessary to pack the dirt solid. A light refilling of the hole and patting the soil with a shovel is sufficient. Allowing the soil to remain loose to some degree allows the roots to grow into the soil that makes up its new home. This is where digging a large hole becomes important. As you refill the hole, ensure the trunk is straight. Allowing the trunk to grow crooked can cause health problems for the tree.

3. Stake the tree

Push a stake into the ground through the root ball. Make sure the stake is tied to the trunk of the tree but that the tie have some “give.” This will ensure the trunk of the tree continues to grow straight. If the tree is larger, it will require multiple stakes.

4. Caring for the tree

Initially, water the tree sufficiently every day. This should continue for several weeks. As the tree begins to grow, the roots will also be growing underneath. As the roots take hold of the new soil, the water requirement will reduce. Gradually start to back off on watering the tree until you aren’t watering the tree anymore. Fertilizing the tree isn’t necessary. Excess fertilizer can actually be harmful to trees. Packing the soil with organic matter is of little benefit also; however, a layer of mulch can help keep weeds away from the tree. A layer measuring a couple inches thick is sufficient.
