Deciding when to plant a tree can be tricky and knowing the right time of year to do so is a major part of any effort to grow a healthy plant. Spring or fall planting is sensible, but it is important to consider other factors. Here are a few things to know about seasonal tree planting.

Best Times to Plant Trees2

Spring

This season may seem the preferable time to plant, but there are a few things to consider:

  • This season gives a tree ample time to mature through the summer, as it will have grown enough by autumn to be ready for the colder months.
  • Ample soil moisture allows leaves to easily sprout after trees are planted, providing necessary nutrients.
  • Trees grow new roots during spring. Sugar reserves, which fuel tree development, are found in roots. As roots mature, stems grow simultaneously, allowing for healthy leaves. This is a taxing process for plants, but if healthy roots are well-established, the tree should become strong.

Fall

Planting as the weather turns cold may seem risky, but it does have benefits:

  • Many tree experts say autumn is the best season to plant because roots can thrive during this time.
  • Planting during this season gives a tree an opportunity to grow roots until early spring. Then, leaves can start to develop.

Deciduous or Evergreens?

Determining which type of tree to plant can be difficult.

  • Deciduous trees lose leaves in autumn, drastically reducing their water requirements. Evergreen leaves and needles remain; and though the tree’s metabolism lowers, they lose water throughout winter.
  • Fall planting of deciduous trees works well but is tougher on evergreens. If immediate appearance is important, however, an evergreen might be your preferred plant.
